As public libraries are challenged to streamline their efforts with smaller budgets and staff, and overall resources, it has never been more pertinent find a new framework with which to guide and evaluate services. Thankfully, those working with children, teens, and families have a perfect ally when it comes to that dreaded discussion of  “return on investment”, that will help marry the best of the qualitative and quantitative data that youth librarians struggle to measure their successes.

In this informative and interactive webinar you’ll learn all about the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets framework and philosophy for creating healthy kids and healthy communities. The first half of the program will be an overview of adolescent behavioral and psychological research that lead up to the creation of the Developmental Assets framework, as well as how current studies illustrate the benefit of assets modeling and mentorship in a young person’s life.

The second half of the program will focus on exploring the assets as they pertain to our work in the library and best practices when working with teens, from programming to customer service. Be prepared to share your experiences, struggles, and successes and participate – in real time – with examples of how to modify and adapt your current programs and projects to fit the Developmental Assets framework.

Participants will learn:

  • How to understand the anatomy of the teen brain and how it presents unique, complex issues in regards to those working with youth.
  • About the Search Institute and how their Developmental Assets framework parallels the mission of youth services programming, outreach, and collection development in libraries.
  • To identify common “problem patron behavior” in regards to teens in the library and how teen services staff can arm themselves with “sparks” and other valuable team building and staff training material so that all library staff understand the value of serving teens.
  • To identify community partners who are also stakeholders in asset building in your neighborhood for future outreach and collaboration.

Krista King-Oaks - Biography

Krista King-Oaks has worked in both academic and public libraries over the past twelve years. She received her MLS from the University of Kentucky where she specialized in public libraries and youth services. Currently, Krista is a Children’s Programming Librarian for the Kenton County Public Library in Covington, Kentucky, where she is devoting time to creating a new vision for elementary-aged programs and services.

Krista has presented on topics as diverse as customer service, collection development, and programming both locally and nationally. Krista is a member of the 2012 YALSA Protege class, and is currently co-convener for the Teen Services Special Interest Group and ROYAL (Reviewers of Young Adult Literature) for SWON Libraries.
