On a recent visit to Campbell County Public Library, JC Morgan, the Library Director and I, talked about a wide variety of topics.  From ongoing technology training for staff, to their latest outreach addition, to the current lawsuit, we covered it all.

Regarding staff training on technical competencies, JC shared that over the years they have tried many different models. What's working now are two mandatory half-day sessions per year.  They offer make-up sessions, of course. This approach works because everyone participates, questions can be answered, it can be tailored to the specific needs of staff. And when the training is completed, managers and supervisors know what everyone knows. JC believes that supporting staff development is a must.  If we want to continue to provide the best services to our customers, understanding and being able to explain current technology is a necessary skill.

Campbell County Public Library has a terrific outreach program specifically for those communities who are sometimes not served by other services.  They deliver materials to the homebound, they have 'pop-up' libraries in nursing homes and adult day care centers, they have kits to lend to nursing homes' staff that engage seniors in remembering the past.  Newly added to this line-up, they send out their e-reader petting zoo, so that seniors can learn about the devices and become more comfortable with the technology.  For those with a visual impairment, an e-reader opens up a world of literature and magazines that is otherwise out of reach.

The Campbell County Public Library has three locations, Cold Spring, Fort Thomas and Newport.  They serve a population of >90,000 residents and circulate >1 million items annually.  So, yes, they're busy!
