SWON Visits – Wilmington Public Library

Last year when I visited with Nancy Ehas, Director of the Wilmington Public Library, she was experimenting with their teen area. She wanted it to be inviting, cozy, but not overly done. On my recent visit, she seems to have found a winning formula for her teens and her library space. Comfortable chairs, a designated area, wi-fi, good reads. On a typical summer week day, teens were coming and going all morning. It looked like a win-win to me.

Nancy has recently taken on the challenge of running a new library branch; Clinton Massie Branch located in the Clinton Massie High School. Over the years, several of our region’s public libraries have entered into joint agreements to help manage/run school libraries. That was the case for Wilmington and Clinton Massie High School. What’s changed is that the High School could no longer staff any hours/nor help with other operational tasks. Wilmington agreed to take on the challenge, even including opening at 7:30am during the school year so that students can still use the facility in preparation for the school day. Way to step up and be responsive to your community’s needs!

Finally, a personal and large “Thank You” to Nancy for suggesting we offer intermediate level programming without a big time commitment. That conversation led to a new series of Level-Up Labs which has received an excellent response from our region.
