At the last Teen Services meeting I had the pleasure of meeting many dynamic and forward-thinking teen librarians. They shared their plans, past successes, things that didn’t go very well and what they’d like to change the next time. Each librarian came from a unique neighborhood or town or urban area and each was determined to bring new, fun, and exciting opportunities to their teens. Erin DeSantis, Teen Librarian at the Covington Branch of the Kenton County Public Library, planned to host a Maker Camp this summer. And so she has.

“What is Maker Camp?

Maker Camp is a free, 6-week online (and in-person) summer camp for young Makers interested in DIY, making, creating, crafting, hacking, tinkering, and learning.” (makercamp.com/about/)

The idea is to get young people making things, with support. Each week the folks at Make: roll out a theme, a virtual field trip and project ideas with instructions. The group leader (hopefully with group input) selects the project, taking into consideration the skill level and age of their participants. Week one of this year’s camp featured an interview with Pixar’s Valerie LaPointe who is a story artist. Kids can make a sketchbook, and/or build the character called Makey out of paper, fabric or even 3D print him!

Maker Camp, an impressive way to keep kids engaged and learning all summer. Way to make it happen, Erin and the Kenton County Public Library!
