Fairy cottage

Sharing occurred before the internet and that in-person, personal sharing is still delightful. On a recent visit to Highland County District Library in Hillsboro, I was struck by a display case full of fairy homes. Jennifer West, Library Director, explained that these cases are used for whatever community members would like to share. I’ve seen book/movie displays put together as community recommendations and I’ve seen artwork in school libraries, crafted by students. But this was the first time for a more open-ended display opportunity. Jennifer says the displays vary widely and community members seem to enjoy both the opportunity to share something they value as well as looking at what someone else treasures. The display changes regularly so customers are often greeted with something they haven’t seen before. Being the place where people can share their skills and passions builds community. Highland County shows us a simple method that we can add to our community-building toolbox.

The fairy village includes hand-lettered cards describing materials used and vintage craft magazines that inspired the artist.
