#trc2017 is here!

Last year, over 200 of you participated. How many of you want to try for the trophy this time around?

Our Teen Reading Challenge is one of our most popular events. How does it work? Library staff anywhere can form a team, consisting of at least 3 people. You may recruit others from your library, or your friends, or your library's teens, or people from other libraries... whoever you think would enjoy the challenge! One of our goals is to foster relationships inside and across libraries, so however you want to put together your team is fine by us. You've got your team? How does it work from there?

Team Captains will email us at info@swonlibraries.org with their team name to begin. We'll help you get registered from there. Teams will log their YA reading from Februrary, 1st until March 31st on LibraryThing. (We'll set up an account for you.)  Yes, you can log books "retroactively." As long as you read 'em starting 2/01. What counts as YA reading? Well, anything marketed as YA lit, of course, and also any books you legitimately believe teens would be interested in.

At the end of the Challenge, we'll average out the pages per team member, and the team with the highest average wins. Simple!

Wins what, you ask? We're still finalizing prizes, but last year we gave out free tech programs, board games and cold, hard cash. We'll be doing something similar this year. Also, you'll get big-time bragging rights.

The Challenge functions as an excellent way to practice team building, catch up on that YA reading, improve your Readers' Advisory, and just have fun. All the rules and fine print can be found on the event page: swonlibraries.org/event/trc2017

Questions? You can reach out to me (Cassondra) or D at cassondra@swonlibraries.org or deanna@swonlibraries.org or anyone at
info@swonlibraries.org. Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Save the Date: "Take 5: An Ohio Youth Services Day of Dialogue" comes to Dayton

Take 5 is a day of dialogue and discovery for public library teen and youth services specialists, museum and arts educators, school librarians, afterschool and recreation leaders, and other youth advocates. This year Take 5 is pleased to have local author and advocate, Katrina Kittle, as a featured speaker. The ever-popular activity fair returns this year and promises more active learning opportunities! Attendees will exchange ideas, share successes, and inspire each other in conversation and shared activities. Expect to be surprised, challenged, affirmed, and invigorated.

Registration is anticipated to open in February. Registration will be announced via SWON and on other Ohio library and arts listservs, and will be posted to the Take 5 webpage, the Facebook page and the SWON website. School librarians, museum educators, and other youth serving professionals will be invited to apply for a full scholarship (hotel cost and registration fees) to attend the event. Details about the scholarship and application will be available soon.

Avoid the rush; put in your work requests to attend now!

We've still got room in "Recharge Your Book Club"

SWON is pleased to be able to provide PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price).

Next up: "Recharge Your Book Club." Reader’s advisor Becky Spratford has been leading book clubs for over 14 years and has seen it all. In this webcast she will share her tips and tricks for success. All book groups go through their ups and downs, but re-energizing your group is not as hard as it may seem.

Becky Spratford will walk you through how to confidently identify and utilize the best resources for leading a book discussion, pick books that will engender the best conversations, lead a more interactive discussion even with the most jaded of groups. Let her show you how to take control, shake things up, and rediscover why you started the group in the first place
