Take 5: A Day of Youth Services Dialogue - Where We’ve Been and Where We’re Going: Empowering Youth Advocates

Take 5 is a day of dialogue and discovery for teen services staff, school librarians and associates, and other youth advocates. The 6th annual Take 5 event continues our exploration of creative approaches, new ideas, collaboration, and network-building to inspire you and help you recharge.

Our featured speaker, Katrina Kittle, novelist and TedX speaker, will share tools to create positive change for ourselves and our young people. There will be panel of experts from various fields will address ways to support vulnerable and marginalized young people; interactive brainstorming and reflection sessions to encourage attendees to exchange ideas, share successes, and inspire each other; and even LEGO challenges to build teamwork and demonstrate how to easily incorporate STEAM into your programs.

We'll have hands-on activity stations -- from kitchen science to electronic textiles, ukuleles to unicycles -- that will provide you a wealth of ideas to bring back to your workplace and community. The Take 5 planning team also invites attendees to contribute to "Windows to our World", an informal visual display of successful activities, services and programs offered at attendees’ organizations, available for attendees to enjoy throughout the day, and a featured component of the afternoon session.

More info can be found at swon.li/2017take5

The cost of Take 5 is very affordable at $10 for the day, which includes food. However, Take 5 would like to hear the unique perspective of highly qualified museum or art educators, school employees, or other youth advocates outside the public library field and they are offering a scholarship for those who meet the above criteria, which includes $100 towards travel expenses. The deadline is very soon, but we did want to share! All applications must be submitted by March 10, 2017. Details are at tinyurl.com/T5T6scholarship

Space is limited for Take 5 and over half the spots have already been claimed, so if you'd like to join your collegues on May 5th in Dayton, OH, you'll need to register now! Registration is supported by SWON Libraries and you can sign up at swon.li/2017take5

Tech Services: OVGSTL is almost here

Take 5 isn't the only big library event happening in May. May 21st to the  23rd the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Service Librarians will be hosting their conference at Cincinnati's own Xavier University.

This conference focuses on technical services by design as we seek to update, upgrade and uplift existing services to provide better service and selection to our users. All of this technology is for people and technical services continues to work to improve management and workflow skills and to provide outreach to new areas, materials, and services within the library and without while wresting with new security and privacy issues.

All 3 days are only $120 and there are 1 day passes as well. Take a look at tinyurl.com/ovgtsl17
