Creating Readers with Song & Play

Play & music are an important part of every child's development. Not only can play develop social skills, but play also has a correlation with early literacy skills (PDF). Likewise, a "growing body of research is affirming the central role of music in early literacy." This is why "Music and Movement" storytimes -- that is, storytimes that don't only emphasize reading aloud to children -- are growing in popularity all across the country. Most of us incorporate many of these elements into our programs; we all know lots of songs and fingerplays! Play, however, can be a tougher sell. People will understand how reading increases literacy, will often make the connection between music and literacy, but many may ask, "How does play increase literacy?"

In a lively workshop planned for October, we've invited Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen, creator of Mother Goose on the Loose, to share the answer to this question and to demonstrate how we can incorporate the different types of play in our libraries.

MGOL is an award-winning early literacy program developed by a librarian with its roots in the "Your Baby Needs Music" program. Betsy attended these programs with her antsy son in the 1980s and she was impressed with both how understanding the program was of a toddler's need to move around, as well as how much her son was learning. She was so excited, in fact, that she became a certified instructor for the program. From there, she created her own Mother Goose on the Loose program that garnered her a Library Journal "Movers and Shakers" award, inspired a book, and eventually evolved into these popular, informative, and fun workshops.

Our workshop will be hosted in partnership with the Boone County Public Library and will be held at the Main Branch of BCPL on Tuesday, October 24th.  Topics covered will include: the value of play, ages and stages of play, practical tips for adding play, and more! We will learn about the social, emotional, and creative skills children learn through play, and take away valuable techniques for improving early literacy in our communities. Betsy will also explore the science regarding the human brain and early childhood development, and how your early childhood programs will positively impact children’s learning and family relationships.

Can't attend? We encourage you to check out some of the great MGOL resources anyway! Many are shared on the MGOL website, and there's a cool flannel board app for iPad, many great books by Betsy, and, of course, there's the book that started it all (an updated version of which will be released in January).

But we hope you can join us in Burlington, KY in October, so register today to reserve your spot!
