New Goals for Libraries, Learning about SWON, & a Chance to Check out Dayton's New Library at SWON's Membership Meeting

It's no secret that the mission and scope of libraries has been shifting in recent years -- though in many ways, it really always has. Nonetheless, it can be easy to get hung up on old ideas about what a library's function is and difficult to assess what the needs of your library's constituency might be in the future. Luckily, there are many great resources out there, such as the American Library Association's Center for the Future of Libraries, or the University of Kansas's "Community Toolbox" to help you keep tabs on the directions many libraries are heading and determine the needs of your own community.

However, if you are interested in hearing more information on shifting library goals, adopting a customer-centric model, and how to determine what goals work for you, you may want to check out SWON's Winter Membership Meeting, which will feature expert library consultant Pat Wagner and her presentation "Focus on Your Library's New Goals: Addressing the Real Life Issues of Your Customers."

SWON welcomes leaders of potential members institutions as well as long-time supporters to learn what SWON is all about and what we're planning for the future at our Membership Meetings. These events are great opportunity to hear from an engaging speaker, network with other library leaders, hear about what SWON has been doing and learn a little bit about what it means to be part of our consortium and our community.

This year, we'll be at the brand new main branch of the Dayton Metro Library, where you'll also get a chance to tour this great new facility. You can join us for a lunch at noon, come at 1pm to hear from Pat Wagner, come for the update on SWON at 2:30 or, hopefully, join us for all three. These events are free if you will not be joining us for lunch.

More information on the meeting and registration is at swon.li/2017-Winter-Meeting. We hope you can join us!

Great webinars for new library employees... or anyone else

SWON has a couple of great webinars lined up from local experts, just for you!

Those that are new to the library world, need a refresher or just want to learn more about some great topics: Check out Tell Me What You Want: The Art of the Reference InterviewBeginning Legal Research for the Public Librarian. These webinars are led by local presenters to help you get the best, most relevant information for serving in libraries in the Greater Cincinnati area, Northern Kentucky and anywhere else.

Tell Me What You Want: The Art of the Reference Interview will be held on 11/14 and presented by 20-year reference services veteran Mike Fair of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. From Mike "Finding out what patrons really need can be a challenge -- learn how to answer the question that is asked... and the ones that aren't! The Reference Interview really is a fine art and you can learn more about making patrons feel comfortable in the library, clarifying patron requests and matching reference materials to patrons’ reading levels."

Then, on 11/28 join Vanessa Seeger of the Hamilton County Law Library. With experience in both law libraries and public libraries, Vanessa can help public library employees learn a little more about legal research from a local perspective. Beginning Legal Research for the Public Librarian will cover the basics of online legal research in Ohio and Kentucky. Vanessa will examine terminology, resources and search techniques for helping public patrons get the most out of what’s available electronically. Other topics will include: sovereign citizens, methods for answering legal questions and an overview of print materials available to the public at the Hamilton County Law Library.

SWON's webinars are free for employees of our Supporting Member Libraries and low-cost for staff in our Ohio Service area and beyond. Discounts are available for members of Ohio's other regional library systems. Can't attend on the date or time listed? All of our webinars are archived for later viewing.
