Virtual and Augmented Reality - Try It Out!

This spring, both Library Journal and American Libraries featured stories on how virtual and augmentated reality are being used in libraries. According to American Libraries, in the near future, library professionals will need to consider how VR, AR, and 360-degree video fit into their mission to acquire and organize information, make information about this technology available, and empower users to be media consumers and creators. Lending VR continues libraries’ tradition of providing open access to technology, just like we have with previous technologies like the computer, internet, databases, makerspaces, and e-books.

University and school libraries are using VR in classrooms to visit places they never could in "real life," like a remote Arizona cave system with rare and delicate Native American art. VR and AR have many great uses for STEM learning and creation, but are also useful in disciplines like psychology, storytelling, and education. Public libraries are offering open access to these tools that are currently cost prohibitive for most people, which helps patrons understand a new technology that is approaching mainstream. We can talk about VR and AR as much as we want, but until a person tries it they can't get a full sense of everything it can do. Having these new technologies available at libraries and schools gives users from all backgrounds the opportunity to experience something they may have never had the chance to otherwise and could spark a passion that lasts a lifetime.

As part of our Tech to Lend program, SWON is able to supply several levels of augmented and virtual reality experience - from basic cardboard “goggles” and mobile phone apps to our PS4 gaming system with VR headset. There are hundreds of free apps and videos to use with VR goggles & cardboard viewers and our PS4 comes with several immersive games like Job Simulator, Eagle Flight, and VR Worlds. Our AR kit offers interactive books, coloring pages, and puzzles for kids of all ages - all come with free apps to use on your phone or tablet. With more people gaining equal access to these technologies, more apps and games will be developed and there will be more and more uses for AR & VR in libraries and schools!

Want to try out some VR or AR before you decide to buy this technology for your library? Check out our Tech to Lend page to borrow any of our virtual or augmented reality tech!

I Can’t Reach It! Shelving and Layout in the Children’s Department

The children served by youth services spaces/departments span a vast spectrum of developmental milestones. This webinar will challenge staff who work with children to take a fresh look at their spaces with differing age groups- from infants through tweens in mind. Space allocation, shelving, displays, and even the placement of the reference and circulation desks all impact circulation and customer experience. Is your space functioning at its best at each point along the growth curve?

Following this webinar, attendees will be able to:

• Determine if their collection allocation and placement is maximized for youth patrons interest, demand, and convenience.
• Understand the impact of signage as a user experience and how to incorporate it effectively and efficiently in a space used by non-readers, emergent readers, and early readers.
• Orient their materials, shelving, and service points with young patrons in mind.
• Use space creatively.

We will tackle each topic with options for libraries with little to no budget, some budget, and big budgets for improvements. This interactive webinar will encourage you to share your departments best as we walk through ideas from libraries nationwide.

Presenter Jill Burket Ragase has enthusiastically shared her passion for Youth Services as an Independent Library Consultant for four years. She earned her MLS from the University of Kentucky and is the former Children’s Librarian and Juvenile Collection Development Librarian for the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, an SLJ 5 star library.

PCI Webinar - Spanish Storytime: Where to Start & How to Do It (even if you barely speak Spanish!)

There are more than 37 million Spanish speakers in the United States, and it is by far the most spoken non-English language for people over the age of 5.  Spanish is also the most spoken language of non-Hispanics in households in the United States. The desire for parents to give their children exposure to a second language and the rapid growth of Hispanic populations in the United States is all the more reason to start an engaging bilingual storytime at your library.  In this interactive webinar program, Alicia Lemar will give you a variety of tools that you will be able to use to:

• Select appropriate titles for Bilingual Storytimes
• Teach rhymes and songs that will help children and adults recall the language
• Utilize props to further enhance language development

Learn the ins and outs of presenting a bilingual storytime from an experienced children’s librarian and bilingual storytime presenter. We’ll cover tips and tricks to make your bilingual storytime a success - even if you are not a native speaker or have limited knowledge of Spanish!
