When your library is part of a larger institution, how can you become indispensable to your 'internal community'? One way is to be flexible and do what is asked of you or what is needed because you see the need in front of you. Kelly Stevens of ITT Technical Institute in Norwood, Ohio does both. She wants her students to be able to use libraries for life, not simply while they're attending ITT.

Like most librarians today, Kelly works with many who do not have an internet Connection at home. All of their homework must be done in her library or the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Kelly offers technical and writing assistance all day. This is especially important due to ITT's rolling admission. She cannot count on fall orientation although she does orient new faculty so that they too may make best use of the library resources. Kelly coordinates other campus-wide functions, e.g. tutoring and technical support. Kelly visits all of the beginning classes so that students place a name with the face. And even if they don't remember all of the instruction in the information overload of the first week or so, they do remember that Kelly is available to help them all day long.
