SWON Visits – McAuley High School

Art Installation at McAuley High SchoolPutting yourself in someone else’s shoes is not easy to do. We become used to our own lives, our own problems. Unfortunately, this can lead to a disconnect with others both close to us and far from us. Several local Catholic Girl’s High Schools (Seton, Mother of Mercy and McAuley) joined together to bring in Immaculee Iligabiza, author of “Left to Tell,” her autobiography of surviving the Rwandan Holocaust. The program was a success, with about 900 people attending.

McAuley students read “Left to Tell” for their One Book, One Community program last summer. This year they have continued to build community and understanding by weaving in related service projects, writing projects and art projects. One such project was the fabrication of the bathroom replica pictured here. The bathroom figures prominently in the story as that is where Ms. Iligabiza hid, along with seven other women for 91 days. The replica is currently in the library, making its statement by its simple presence.

Journals at the McAuley High School LibraryBecky Reilly, the librarian at McAuley, supports students and staff on a daily basis. From sending new journal Table of Contents pdfs to staff, to lending technology to students, to hosting large scale art projects, Becky is one with her school’s mission and her student’s success. And that includes helping them walk in another person’s shoes.
