Student at the Silhouette Cameo

On Monday, January 19, the Mariemont High School Library MakerSpace hosted a very special guest--SWON Library’s own Nathan Swartzendruber! Each week we hold a Maker Monday event featuring a hands-on lesson or a challenge, and when I heard that SWON had a new loaning library of maker devices, I jumped at the chance to borrow the Silhouette Cameo digital cutting tool. I opted to borrow Nathan too so he could teach us the basics and speed up the learning curve. Nathan showed a rapt audience of makers how the tool works and demonstrated cutting designs into a variety of material types including paper, vinyl, and wax freezer paper. Vinyl decal on a laptopNathan also taught us how to use the accompanying design software, Silhouette Studio, which, while not prohibitively difficult to use, is intimidating when you first try to use it. Nathan helped make it straightforward and manageable, and within the hour we had student makers cutting their designs. Over the next two week of borrowing the device we had a blast running wild with our imaginations and experimenting with designs. We cut vinyl decals for laptop and phone cases, letters for bulletin boards, iron on t-shirt stencils, and foam hexagons for math manipulatives. Reluctantly, I returned the Silhouette Cameo to SWON this week, but not before asking our PTO to purchase one for our library--how did we ever get by without it? I will definitely be taking advantage of this SWON Libraries service again soon, and so should you. Nathan and the Maker Space loaning library are ready for you and your staff and patrons to borrow. What are you waiting for?
