#TRC2018 is just around the corner!

It's time to prepare for the Teen Reading Challenge! As one of our most popular events, the Teen Reading Challenge encourages librarians and library staff to read materials for teens. What is the Teen Reading Challenge? Teams compete to see who has the best average of pages read during February and March. The top three teams will receive lovely prizes!

How does it work? First, you create a team of no less than three people. You may recruit co-workers, colleagues from other libraries, and even teens from your advisory groups, book clubs, or students in your school. Once you've formed a team, you will contact SWON (info@swonlibraries.org) with your team name and the number of members joining you. Once you've registered your team, you will receive a LibraryThing account to share with your teammates. From there, you and your team will log books as the challenge progresses. Whether its YA, graphic novels or an adult novel that has teen appeal, anything that you would hand to a teen to read counts for this challenge!

The soft deadline to form and register your team is January 31st. The earlier you register, the sooner you can prepare for the challenge and receive your group LibraryThing account. We encourage you to create your teams as soon as possible. The hard deadline to form and register teams is February 16th.

On February 1st, the challenge will begin. In April, SWON will announce winners and hand out prizes. Prizes this year include a Kano Pixel Kit, Google Cardboard compatible goggles, and a paper circuits kit! Not to mention the bragging rights that come with winning. Even if you aren't interested in winning, the Teen Reading Challenge is a great way to catch up on reading, introducing staff members to the wonderful world of YA, and improve your reader's advisory.

More details and in-depth rules are located on this page: https://swon.li/TRC2018. Reach out to us if you have any questions or you can send a general inquiry to the SWON Infobox (info@swonlibraries.org). I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck!

PCI Webinar - Say It Only Once!

You have what you think is a straightforward conversation with an employee. Then you find out later they didn’t get it. They’re off on a tangent, completely lost, or spinning in circles. In this interactive and informative program, learn three tactics to massively improve your manager/employee interactions so you can trust your employees to do what you ask the first time.

Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for PCI Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today!

PCI Webinar - Self-Care

Librarians are part information specialist, part child care provider and part social worker. Particularly in public libraries, work extends far beyond books. Along with the stresses of overworked staff, librarians can get compassion fatigue---burnout and indifference because of so many demands from those who are suffering.

In "Self-Care: Protecting Yourself (and Others) from Burnout" you will learn how to avoid burnout through knowledge and practical tips.
