Programming to the People - Libraries, Social Media, and Periscope

As social media has grown in popularity and importance, libraries have learned how to use it to spread their message. Since early Web 2.0 days, libraries have been using social media to do things like hold book clubs, create raffles, and interact with our patrons directly via Tweets, Facebook posts, and more; but did you know that you can also stream programs live to your patrons? Libraries across the country are offering programming streamed live via services like Facebook, Periscope, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram Stories, Snapchat, and more. In 2016, Boston Public Library used Facebook Live to give a tour of its Shakespeare Unauthorized exhibition, while Myra Oleynik at Peters Township Public Library in Pennsylvania used it in 2017 to host a "Preschool-a-Palooza" - a preschool fair for parents. The librarians at PTPL used Facebook Live to introduce each preschool and invite parents to stop by throughout the day while the Palooza was happening. The Wilmington Memorial Library has also used Facebook Live to share its program on drones. You can use live streaming not only to share your programs and lectures, but also to give virtual tours of your library, meet staff members, and more.

Live streaming is taking off, and it is easier (and cheaper!) than ever to get on board. If you're interested in how this could work for your library, join us online June 5th as Cierra Earl & Kaira Tucker from Kenton County Libraries share how they interact with patrons by creating and broadcasting library programs live on the mobile apps Periscope and Facebook. They will discuss how to plan programming to be consumed by your patrons online and how these programs have gone for them. If you would like to check out their previous Periscope programming at Kenton County, visit the 2017 Local History and Genealogy Periscopes archive on Kenton County's website.

PCI Webinar - Dealing with Opiate Users in the Library: From Behavior Management to Overdosers

In 2015, more Americans died from drug overdose than from car accidents and gun homicides combined, and more than six out of 10 of those overdoses involved an opioid. Preliminary data for 2016 suggests that drug overdose deaths for that year rose by about 19%—the largest annual increase the United States has ever seen. (American Libraries, June 2017)

In this interactive and informative program, Dr. Steve Albrecht will discuss the issues of dealing with opiate users in the library including safety, health, and security concerns.

By the end of the program, attendees will:

• Recognize the tremendous increase in opiate overdose problems in this country and why libraries are not immune to the issue.
• How to recognize opiate use abuse in patrons - from a legal and medical perspective.
• Know the differences between alcohol use, drug use, poly-drug use, and opiate drug use and withdrawal symptoms in patrons.
• Know when opiate use by patrons is a police issue versus a paramedic’s response.
• Discuss when and if Narcan use by library staff on opiate overdoes patrons may be a necessity.
• Deal with the safety hazards related to opiate users, their drugs, and drug paraphernalia, including needles.

Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for PCI Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today
